A pub in an old mining town struggles to keep its doors open

TJ Ballantyne struggles to hold onto his pub, which is the one remaining public space where the residents of a once thriving mining community can still meet. To make matters worse, tensions in the community are rising over the Syrian refugees which have been relocated into the small County Durham town. Despite the tensions, Ballantyne forms a friendship with Yara, one of the refugees who has recently arrived in town.
